Francisco Tapia and his father have been in the produce business for more than 30 years. Francisco Tapia Sr. began growing organically on his farm Campo San Luis at La Costa de Hermosillo because it was cost-effective!
His first successful organic raisin season proved this to him. Using garlic as repellant, seaweed as growth regulator and vinegar as herbicide, Sr. Tapia was able to control pests and plagues that had previously troubled his crops. After this successful raisin season, he began to work the land this way not only for the vineyard, but also for the vegetables. Wanting recognition in the marketplace for his superior growing methods, he decided to go through the process of organic certification in 2005.
He submitted soil samples from the grape and vegetable blocks, and later took leaf samples from the vineyards. Two weeks later, when the sample results were returned as clean and free of any presence of pesticides or prohibited substances, he had the opportunity to become certified Organic. Francisco Tapia Jr. joined his father in business, especially to help manage and develop the Organic program.
Beginning with the first load of organic grapes in May 2006, Rico Farms has continued to expand their organic offerings. By the end of that year, they had sent out their first load of organic produce including butternut, acorn, spaghetti, watermelons and melons.
Rico Farms consistently grows high quality organic fruit and vegetables. In addition, they do so while respecting their ecosystem. The farm borders on land that wildlife depends on for habitat, and they farm without disturbing these special neighbors!
